Sporting Clube de Goa (SCG) thumped Guardian Angel SC 4-0 in the Goa Professional League at panchayat ground, Nagoa, on Thursday.

Lloyd Cardozo (24’) gave Sporting the lead while captain Joel Colaco (79’) and substitute Marcus Mascarenhas (81′) scored quick goals within the span of two minutes. Mark Carvalho (88’) then converted a penalty to give Sporting a comfortable victory.

Sporting are top of the standings with 30 points after 15 games.

Sporting and Guardian Angel started on a cautious note as both teams tried to get hold on to the ball.

In the initial moments the ball was mostly restricted to the midfield, but slowly, Sporting took charge.

Left-back Kunal Kundaikar made some promising overlap runs. His ability to cross the ball in the danger zone created panic on many occasions in the rival territory.

Sporting found the breakthrough just before the half an hour mark when one such ball from Kunal found Lloyd inside the danger zone. The striker controlled the ball well and hammered in a grounder past Guardian Angel custodian Oswin Rodrigues.

Just before the break, Lloyd could have had another after making a daunting run forward. He pulled the trigger, but Oswin managed to get his fingertips on Lloyd’s powerful grounder.

In the second half, Guardian Angel exerted immense pressure, but the Sporting’s backline remained focus.

After the cooling break, Lloyd had a good opportunity to score with only the keeper at his mercy but instead tried to find a teammate.

However, off the resultant corner, Sporting made it count and captain Joel doubled the lead after a goal mouth melee.

Before even Guardian Angel could regroup, substitute Marcus Mascarenhas calmly scored the third.

Sporting were not done yet and earned a penalty which was calmly converted by new signing Mark Carvalho.

Sporting Clube de Goa captain Joel was awarded the Man-of-the-Match award by the SCG Director, Danira Vaz.
