Urging the youth to come forward to take up farming, Aldona MLA Adv Carlos Alvares Ferreira said that there is a need to protect the fields and Goa’s rural economy.
He was speaking at the inauguration of work for improvement of the nullah near the house of Bhanudas Shirodkar at Panarim, Aldona on Saturday.
Officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD) and ward members of Aldona panchayat were present.
“This work entails restoration of the flow of the water channel because the water used to overflow and flood the fields. The WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar had come and inspected this place. I am grateful to him and other officials of the department for processing the file and pushing the project,” he said.
Ferreira called for supporting farmers and agriculture in Goa.
“Farmers should get assistance. If our fields are destroyed, then agriculture will end and we will be forced to import foodgrains from outside the state. Prices are suddenly raised when someone is dependent on a certain commodity. There is market monopoly. This should not happen,” he said.
“We have fields, and farmers can cultivate these fields. People can sell their produce. This becomes self-employment for locals. Farmers in this area are still cultivating their fields and I am glad. I have been fighting for the cause for the farmers in the assembly and outside as well. If the fields are destroyed then Goa’s rural economy will be finished. I urged the youth, especially students, soil your hands and take up farming. Don’t only spend time on phones. Come forward and continue such good practices,” he said.
