In a strong show of unity, residents of Calangute have voiced firm opposition to the growing “casino culture” in the coastal village, calling for the immediate shutdown of alleged illegal establishments operating in the area.
At a gram sabha meeting held recently, villagers unanimously raised concerns over safety, traffic congestion, and disturbances linked to such units. Residents urged authorities to take strict action against two establishments, including one reportedly functioning near the village panchayat office.
Locals highlighted the lack of basic infrastructure, especially designated parking spaces, which has led to vehicles being parked along roads, causing severe traffic congestion and obstruction. They also pointed out that late-night noise, increased footfall of outsiders, and rising safety concerns are affecting the peaceful environment of the village.
Speaking on behalf of villagers, Clotilde Braganza stated that casinos and dance bars operating within residential areas are disrupting daily life and disturbing community stability. She further expressed concern about such establishments being located close to a government primary school, exposing children to inappropriate environments and noise disturbances.
Resident Manuel Cardozo questioned the legality of these operations, noting that casinos are permitted only within five-star hotels. He alleged that one such unit appears to be functioning as a standalone casino, while others operate slot machines.
Villagers also raised objections to unauthorised traffic barricades reportedly installed by a newly opened casino as part of its promotion, further adding to commuter inconvenience.
Calangute Sarpanch Joseph Sequeira confirmed that the village panchayat has issued notices to the concerned establishments, directing them to cease operations. Residents have demanded swift enforcement action and long-term measures to preserve the village’s character and safety.
